With bypolls in 13 municipal wards likely to be held soon, the BJP has decided to put its faith in old hands. The party has offered its former MLAs, who were once councillors from their seats, a chance to contest the bypolls.
The AAP, which is contesting the municipal polls for the first time, has already announced its candidates for the seats. The party also said the result of the bypolls would be a precursor to the final municipal polls slated for 2017.
The BJP, on the other hand, is treading cautiously, after it lost the 2015 assembly elections to the AAP. Not taking chances this time, the party leadership gave those former MLAs — who had contested and lost assembly polls in 2015 — the right to accept or refuse to contest the bypolls.
As a senior leader put it, “These party leaders have fought elections at both levels and have experience. They know the electorate and their constituency well. We need to win these seats to prove that AAP’s magic has faded. We too are taking elections on these 13 seats seriously. It may or may not be an indicator as to who will win the municipal polls in 2017, but it can build or damage confidence.”
“While there are plenty of party workers who claim they can win an election for the party, the BJP has to look at other factors as well,” said a senior leader.
The notification for the bypolls is likely to be issued by the election commission this week.
